The competition brief called for a staging point for performances; a meeting place and site for cultural events. This is how we came to look at our walls as a quad of Prosceniums - traditionally the area in a theatre between the actors and the audience.
The most important consideration for our 4 walls was the positioning of the openings. The voids in all four sides are not simply a means of entering and exiting the space but become framed views for activities taking part within and without the structure. By continually alternating the size and spacing of these openings we hope to create a wide variety of spatial conditions to be used in a number of different ways. Importantly the largest opening faces out onto the car park site, allowing the pavilion to be used as a venue for conventional concerts and performances. Our aim is to provide a basic skeletal backdrop that allows the positioning of stage and audience to be explored.
